Summary

Distinguishing skeletal, dental and rotational changes of both, on lateral cephalometric radiographs has been a long-standing problem in orthodontics. This communication is an attempt to describe a novel method to achieve the same. The procedures are based on the structural superimpositions of Björk and vector geometry. The mathematical formulae and the setting-up of a commercially available software program are presented in a step-by-step fashion. In order to exemplify, the method was applied to the tracings of two individual clinical cases and to the pre- and post-treatment tracings of a group of patients. The three orthodontic situations appear quite similar when evaluated by the Pitchfork Analysis, but distinct differences among them became evident when analysed by the method described here.
