Die pulmonale Aspiration von Mageninhalt muss als eine potenziell lebensbedrohliche Komplikation betrachtet werden [1]. Folglich sollten die Möglichkeiten zu deren Vermeidung - abhängig vom individuellem Risiko - stets bedacht werden. Dies gilt ebenso in der Kinderanästhesie, was ¿Der besondere Beitrag¿ von F. J. Kretz und C. Krier in dieser Ausgabe näher beleuchtet [2]. Grundsätzlich ergeben sich für die tägliche Praxis zwei Fragen, auf die hier aus diesem aktuellen Anlass kurz eingegangen werden soll.
