Summary

Guttapercha is the preferred filling material in endodontics. The aim of the root filling is a hermic and aseptic sealing of the canal. Therefore only sterile endodontic filling materials should be used. In this study possible influences from different disinfection techniques on the dimension - diameter and weight - of ISO normed gutta-points were investigated. Before and after insertion into 4 different disinfecting solutions as well as in distilled water serving as a control, both weight and diameter of the gutta-points at a location in a 3 and 16mm distance from the top of the points were measured at 400 gutta-points. None of these disinfectants had an influence on the shape of the points or the weight. Without changing the fit of gutta-points disinfection can prevent a re-contamination of the root canal system.
