Summary

Taken together, these reports suggest some benefit from operative compared with nonoperative treatment in the care of displaced calcaneal fractures. In particular, the suggestion that operative care may improve function in certain subgroups of patients who do not receive workers' compensation may be of particular clinical benefit. Additional studies using patient-oriented quality of life measures to verify the positive results of surgery in these subgroups are needed.
