Erwartete Wirkungen und Nebenwirkungen sowie persönliche Präferenzen von Patient und Behandler beeinflussen die Verordnung von Psychopharmaka. Gleichzeitig soll „wirtschaftlich” verschrieben werden, sodass auch ökonomische Aspekte eine erhebliche Rolle spielen. Angetrieben durch die Preissituation wird der Einsatz neuartiger gegenüber konventionellen Neuroleptika besonders kontrovers diskutiert. Die folgende Debatte fasst die Kernaussagen zusammen.
