Brad Worrall is the Guest Editor of this second issue of Seminars in Neurology on stroke. He was also the Guest Editor of the previous issue on stroke that was the final issue of 2005, entitled Stroke Acute Management and Recovery. He has worked very hard to provide us with a thorough understanding of the advances in the identification and modification of stroke risk factors, acute stroke management, recovery, and prevention.

Dr. Worrall is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at the University of Virginia. He received his bachelor's degree from Yale University, where he graduated with distinction. He went to medical school at Emory University and there was awarded the Robert F. Kibler, Sr. Prize in Neurology. He did his internship at Emory University and his residency in neurology at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. He was Dr. Clarke Haley's fellow in stroke, and he subsequently obtained a masters degree for his work in interleukin-1 receptor antagonist polymorphisms in carotid atherosclerosis.

Dr. Worrall's primary areas of interest are in the genetic and inflammatory risk factors for cerebrovascular diseases and atherosclerosis. He is also interested in health care disparities in stroke risk factors in underserved populations. Dr. Worrall is presently funded by an NINDS/NIH/KO8 award to study genes and gene expression in cerebrovascular atherosclerosis and is a coinvestigator on several other studies including the Siblings with Ischemic Stroke Study, the Ischemic Stroke Genetics Study, the Genetics of Cerebral Hemorrhage with Anticoagulation, and A Family Study of Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy: Stroke and Cognitive Impairment.

This issue includes manuscripts on dietary modifications for the prevention of stroke, the genetics of stroke, disorders of coagulation, vascular biology, diabetes impact on stroke risk, the contribution of inflammation and infection to stroke, hormone replacement therapy and stroke, the metabolic syndrome, and sleep disorders and stroke. The issue concludes with two manuscripts on clinical research and ethical decision-making. This issue will inspire you and enhance your clinical practice. We thank Dr. Worrall and all of the authors for the tremendous contribution they have made to our understanding of stroke prevention.
