Summary
If osteopathy is to survive in times of evidence-based medicine and amidst the growing usage of „alternative” therapeutic forms, it is essential that sustainable scientific basic principles and guidelines be developed. The average age of the population is steadily rising and will eventually overload the health system. Scientifically substantiated methods of preventive medicine will consequently have to be developed. James McGovern, currently President of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM) has founded a clinical research program with its own institute, the Still Research Institute, specifically for this purpose. 32 research projects have so far been funded, the main focus being placed on standardizing treatment and on the aging process.
