Maternal infection spreading Helicobacter pylori

One way of Helicobacter pylori infection in children may be maternal infection.

Aim of the study: to investigate whether Helicobacter pylori infection in mothers raises infection rate of their children.

Patients and method: 36 members of 11 families were investigated. Each mother, each child but only as many as 7 fathers have undergone the C13 urea breath test. The mean age of mothers was 43.9 that of fathers was 47.7, children was 14.3 years. Results: 6 mothers and 4 fathers were Helicobacter pylori negative, and 5 mothers and 3 fathers were Helicobacter pylori positive. Out of 8 children from 6 Helicobacter pylori negative mothers 2 children and out of 10 children of 5 Helicobacter pylori positive mothers 3 children were urea test positive.

Conclusion: In our study there was no significant difference in Helicobacter pylori positivity rate between children from Helicobacter positive mothers and children from Helicobacter pylori negative mothers.
