Verletzungen des Ellenbogens oder des Unterarms stellen häufig Kombinationen von Frakturen und Bandverletzungen dar, woraus sich komplexe und vielschichtige Krankheitsbilder ergeben. Biomechanische Aspekte müssen daher bei der Rekonstruktion ebenso berücksichtigt werden wie die zu der Verletzung führende Krafteinwirkung. Ein Verständnis der einzelnen Verletzungsmuster ist für eine erfolgreiche Therapie eine maßgebende Vorraussetzung. Weiterhin erfordert die topographische Nähe der neurovaskulären Strukturen gute anatomische und chirurgische Kenntnisse.

Trotz der Komplexität sind jedoch die Ergebnisse nach chirurgischer Intervention zufrieden stellend, sodass zunehmend offensiv die Indikation zur Operation gestellt wird. Dies zuletzt auch, da eine längerfristige Ruhigstellung des Gelenkes nicht selten mit deutlichen Bewegungseinschränkungen einhergeht. Die Therapie, unabhängig ob konservativ oder operativ, stellt weiterhin eine Herausforderung für den Traumatologen dar.
