Die akute Otitis media (AOM) ist eine der häufigsten Infektionskrankheiten in der pädiatrischen ambulanten Praxis. Etwa 6 % aller neu erkrankten Kinder werden hierzulande dem Kinderarzt wegen einer AOM vorgestellt. 75 - 95 % aller Kinder erkranken in den ersten 3 Lebensjahren wenigstens 1-mal an einer AOM, 30 % sogar mindestens 3-mal. Der Altersgipfel liegt zwischen 6 Monaten und 6 Jahren. Die AOM tritt saisonal gehäuft von Dezember bis März auf.
