Bronchogenic cysts are a very uncommon diagnosis in patients with retroperitoneal
tumor. Only 38 cases have been reported up to date in the English literature. The
majority of the reported cases have been discovered incidentally. A pathognomonic
symptom has yet to be established, even though 75% of all cases were found left of
the midline. Excision is the procedure of choice, at least in order to eliminate the
possibility of a malignant tumor. We herein present the case of a 49 years old male
with a incidentally found retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst. A definite diagnosis
could only be established after surgical removal and pathological assessment.
To best of our knowledge, this is the first case of a retroperitoneal bronchogenic
cyst in German speaking literature.
