Oculoplastic Surgery

Challenging and interesting oculoplastic procedures have been developed in recent years. Effective reconstructive procedures have evolved from a strong knowledge in surgical anatomy of the eyelids and orbit. This clearly contributes to the flexibility and innovative ability of the surgeon. Decision making and sound techniques enhance treatment outcomes.

Our articles include repair of the orbital tissues following fractures, tumor excision, and lacrimal injury. Along with a focus on trauma, we have included some innovative and useful techniques regarding ptosis and lateral canthal repair. We are happy to present detailed studies on deep plane midfacial surgery as well as noninvasive periorbital rejuvenation. We also include a review of the complexities of thyroid-related orbitopathy, emphasizing treatment steps specifically describing upper eyelid retraction repair. When ocular and visual function is a concern, integration of techniques to safeguard against vision loss will be included and referred to in this journal section.

The ophthalmic and plastic and reconstruction division at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary has been the foundation for wonderful relationships between residents, fellows, and attendings, who have supported this dynamic section. The teaching and the care of an ever increasing number of patients have been our mission. The contributors to this mission have included teachers such as John Simonton, Byron Smith, and Orkan Stasior. Our close relationship with the otolaryngology department has been positive and rewarding to us. Our recent book, Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery,[1] is an important reference for the information included in this journal. Working with renowned artist Virginia Canterella has been an honor and a privilege. Some of her superb illustrations are included in this journal. We offer special thanks to the contributing authors, who have been so generous with their time and knowledge.
