Abstract: An Alternative Approach to the Maxillary Sinus
A new alternative approach to the maxillary sinus is described. Via a lateral incision
in the vestibulum nasi the lateral aspect of the aperture piriformis is exposed. With
a rounded chisel an opening to the maxillary sinus is created and than enlarged by
a punch. By this approach pathologies within the maxillary sinus, particularly the
lower parts, can be visualized and operatively treated. The advantage of this new
approach, which has not been described in the literature up to now, es the minimal
invasive procedure with excellent overview and the absence of the known complications
of a transfacial approach.
