Abstract
We report on our preliminary experience concerning the use of an Internet-based information
system for rheumatological patients (World Wide Web). We analysed demographic data
and varying user interest over a period of twelve months. On the whole. 85 percent
of the users were men. Approximately 60% were aged between 20 and 40 years. In this
way the users of our WWW-based information system showed a similar demographic distribution
as compared with other healthy users of the Internet. The users were predominantly
interested in an explanation of the principles of a disease or its treatment, or required
a second opinion. In future the Internet will certainly become a popular means of
information and communication between physicians and their patients. It will also
become an important tool for social support and for support of patient's self management
of the disease. Therefore, there is a need of guidelines concerning the quality of
information, interaction with a patient and the physician, and the psychological situation
of the patient him- or herself.

Als populäres Medium bietet sich das Internet, namentlich das World-Wide-Web (WWW)
zunehmend auch als ein hervorragendes Mittel zur Patienteninformation und -kommunikation
an. In der vorliegenden Arbeit berichten die Autoren über erste Erfahrungen mit einem
elektronischen Informationssystem für Rheuma-Patienten im World-Wide- Web (WWW) des
Internets, den ,,Rheuma-Wegweiser im Internet" (http://www.rheuma-zentrum.com). Ausgehend
von einer Nutzungsanalyse der einzelnen Informations- und Kommunikationsangebote dieses
Dienstes werden grundsätzliche Überlegungen zu den Voraussetzungen und zur Sicherung
der Qualität der dargebotenen Informationen einschließlich einer externen Qualitätskontrolle
(Zertifizierung) durch medizinische Fachgesellschaften diskutiert.
