Summary
In a nocturnal monkey the lens matter was replaced with a silicone polymer using a closed-system technique following intracapsular cataract extraction. The amplitude of accommodation achieved with this silicone lens was similar to that of the natural lens preoperatively (10 D up to six months postoperatively). In the rabbit model, a closed system technique was developed with which a 2.2 mm limbal incision and a capsulotomy 1.3 mm in diameter are sufficient for removing even hard lens cores. The small capsulotomy enables the intracapsular space to be separated from the rest of the intraocular space, thus making new strategies for reducing proliferation of lens epithelium possible.
