Sonography in Breast Intervention

Abstract

Ultrasound (US) has been a revolutionary adjunct in the imaging and targeting of breast lesions. In its most simplistic form ultrasound can distinguish a cyst from a solid mass, but it can also potentially characterize solid masses, examine palpable masses, and offer a means of real-time image guidance for intervention. Whereas the use of interventional ultrasound has been better established in other parts of the body, its applications in the breast have been pioneered during the past decade. This article will review some of the basic principles of US needle guidance as well as procedure and patient preparation. The procedures that will be reviewed include cyst aspiration, needle wire localization, fine-needle aspiration, and core needle biopsy.
