Introduction: The renal ultrasound screening has been introduced in our maternity in response to Clinical Urological Chief's proposal, dr. Ioiart.

The paraclinical exam was performed by the neonatologyst physicians.

The aim of screening was to find in early stages the renal abnormalities that can be rectified on surgical way.

Material and methods: The renal ultrasound screening was performed in 2135 newborns, with Logiq 100 Pro device, 3.5MHz scanhead. The study was prospective, between the 15th of January 2007 and the 15th of January 2008.

Results: From the 2135 newborns who were examined in this period of time, 98 newborns were found with renal abnormalities, which consist in 4.59%. The newborns with renal abnormalities will be follow-up both at Pediatric and Urology Departments.

Of all types of renal abnormalities, hydronephrosis represents 72 cases, which consist in 73.46% from neonates with renal abnormalities, and 3.37% from all the neonates who were examinated.

The other types of renal abnormalities found were: polycystic kidney, renal unique cyst, renal duplex, renal angiolipomatosis, etc.

Conclusions: The results of this one year study justify the necessity of renal ultrasound screening at neonates, because of the increased incidence of renal abnormalities.

The screening is considered a part of preventive medicine, which is important in medical assistance and increases the quality of medical act.
