Abstract

Mammography is an important diagnostic tool in the early detection of breast cancer in asymptomatic women, in assessment of suspicious clinical or ultrasound findings, and in follow-up of patients with treated breast cancer. In this context, the MLO (medio-lateral-oblique) and CC (cranio-caudal) views are the so-called standard projections, while all other views are additional examinations. Quality assurance of mammography was first defined by the British National Health System Breast Screening Programme in the so-called PGMI classification. This categorization was assumed from the German Government Health Care system in a modified form (class 1–3). In this publication the most relevant mistakes in mammographic positioning are described and tips and tricks are presented to avoid them.
