ABSTRACT

Type 1 diabetes usually occurs in childhood and adolescence. The associated irreversible disruption of insulin production has the effect that the energy needed by the body cannot be obtained from glucose, but instead from fat as a substitute. The fat breakdown can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis.

Evaluations of the Saxon Child Diabetes Registry showed a disproportionate increase in diabetic ketoacidosis compared to the increasing incidence of type 1 diabetes.

Thus, a prevention program for early detection of type 1 diabetes is urgently needed, which is supposed to be accompanied by a reduction of ketoacidosis rates at manifestation of type 1.
