Nutritional status should be considered a crucial issue regarding the effects of exercise

Dear Editor,
We read with great interest the study by Rodrigo V Neves et al. [1], recently published in the journal. The study assessed the impact of periodized resistance training (RT) on respiratory muscle strength and its relationship with handgrip strength (HGS), fat-free mass (FFM), nitric oxide (NO), and interdialytic weight gain (IWG) in hemodialysis patients. The authors randomly assigned 33 hemodialysis patients to either the RT group (n=15), which engaged in a 24-week RT program approximately 1 hour before the hemodialysis procedure, three times per week, or the control group (n=18). The study found that RT significantly improved maximal inspiratory pressure, maximal expiratory pressures, and peak expiratory flow. Additionally, HGS, FFM, NO, and IWG enhancements were made.
