Pneumokokken

Streptococcus (S.) pneumoniae, landläufig bekannt als Pneumokokken, ist ein zentraler Erreger ambulant erworbener Infektionen des Respirationstraktes (Sinusitis, Lungenentzündung), der Meningitis und von Mittelohrentzündungen. Seltener ist eine primäre Peritonitis, v.a. bei Kindern. Pneumokokkeninfektionen können invasiv verlaufen, d.h. mit einer Bakteriämie einhergehen. Die Entwicklung einer Sepsis ist möglich. Pneumokokken sind daher für eine relevante Krankheitslast und Sterblichkeit verantwortlich.
