Seromas, a Common and Unwanted Postoperative Complication – Overview of the Current State of ResearchAuthors
Abstract
Seromas are a relatively common postoperative complication characterized by the accumulation of clear lymphatic fluid in a newly formed tissue cavity. Seroma formation can occur particularly after surgical procedures involving the removal of large amounts of tissue. The exact pathophysiology is not yet fully understood, but various risk factors and surgical techniques significantly influence their occurrence. This article reviews the definition, etiology, clinical classification, diagnostics, and current treatment and prevention strategies for postoperative seromas, with a particular focus on vascular surgical management.
