Summary

Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis L.): traditional medicinal herb and new findings on efficacy

Extracts from Marshmallow roots contain polysaccharides (rhamnogalacturonans) with antitussive, antibacterial and mucilaginous effects towards mucous membranes of mouth, throat and gut. The active principle of aqueous Marshmallow extract mainly comprises of two aspects. Firstly, the polysaccharides in the extracts form an extensively bioadhesive layers on the surface of the mucous membrane epithelium. Additionally they induce specific physiological effects within epithelial cells by influencing the cell physiology as it was shown for a human nasopharyngeal cell line (KB cells). The cellular uptake of the polysaccharides under in vitro conditions into KB cells by endosomal transport was shown by laser scanning microscopy of fluorescent labelled polysaccharides. From these findings and published data from literature Marshmallow extracts are assessed to be suitable herbal remedies for treating mucous membrane inflammation and dry cough.
