Significance

Selectively substituted o-teraryls are accessible by a palladium/norbornene-catalyzed reaction of aryl iodides, aryl bromides, and arylboronic acids in an ordered sequence. The reason for the high selectivity is the presence of diethyl maleate coordinated to palladium as a ligand.
