Abstract

Three dimensional surface imaging is a technology that enables researchers and clinical practitioners to capture and evaluate the soft tissue of the face in a quick non invasive manner. The images are usually captured using stereophotogrammetric methods. Surface mapping has multiple applications: It allows the evaluation of the normal human face, tracking growth and development, gender and population specific differences. Moreover, it allows longitudinal planning as well as evaluation of treatment outcomes. One of the most popular uses of thee dimensional surface imaging is in cleft lip and palate patients, where morphologic features as well as surgical results can be closely monitored.
