Abstract
The occupational therapy has become a pivotal tool in the complex treatment of rheumatoid
arthritis (RA) patients. Besides a thorough assessment, occupational measures like
joint protection as well as opportunities of functional treatment will be outlined
in more detail. Based on a literature search, the current and focused evidence for
occupational therapy in the management of RA is illustrated. Accordingly, intensive
and comprehensive programmes including training and consulting services achieve significant
improvements in pain and function. Orthotics and splints show little effectiveness.
The increasing importance of occupational therapy tailored to the individual needs
at the patient's workplace is highlighted.
