The multiple ligament injured (dislocated) knee is a devastating knee injury and a complex treatment challenge. The goal of this Special Focus Section of The Journal of Knee Surgery is to provide practical information to the reader for the evaluation and treatment of these complicated knee injuries.

The issue begins with a review of the clinical anatomy of the knee, followed by the initial evaluation of the acute and chronic multiple ligament injured knee. A series of surgical technique articles follow, which address specific combined injury patterns: posterior and anterior cruciate ligament tears combined with medial side injuries, lateral side injuries, and combined medial and lateral side injuries (global laxity). Peroneal nerve injuries may occur in knee dislocations, and a manuscript addressing peroneal nerve injuries with tendon transfers is included to aid in the treatment of these severe knee injuries. A manuscript addressing outcomes of treatment of the multiple ligament injured knee is presented to provide a sense of perspective regarding results in these devastating knee injuries.

The purpose of this Special Focus Section of The Journal of Knee Surgery is to provide experienced knee surgeons, general orthopaedic surgeons, fellows, residents, medical students, and other health care professionals who have an interest in knee dislocations and the multiple ligament injured knee with an overview for the evaluation and treatment of these complex knee injuries.
