Ovarialzysten beim Rind betreffen einzelne Tiere in einer Herde oder treten bestandsweise gehäuft mit einer Inzidenz von bis zu mehr als 30 % auf. Während beim Einzeltier der Auslöser für die Erkrankung in der Regel nicht zu bestimmen ist, sind für ein gehäuftes Auftreten zahlreiche Risikofaktoren beschrieben worden. In den letzten Jahren wurden vor allem Effekte einer energetischen Mangelversorgung, wie sie bei Hochleistungskühen zu Beginn der Laktation unvermeidlich ist, untersucht.
