Zahnmedizinische Leitlinien haben die Aufgabe, Therapiekonzepte und die dafür geeigneten Behandlungsmaterialien zu definieren. Die dafür erforderliche klinische Expertise wird nach Möglichkeit aus randomisierten, kontrollierten Studien gewonnen. Ferner werden Meta-Analysen und prospektive sowie häufig retrospektive, klinische Studien herangezogen. Damit wird die evidenzbasierte Zahnmedizin zu einem unverzichtbaren Bestandteil der Qualitätssicherung in der Praxis. Das Prinzip besteht darin, dass zahnmedizinische Entscheidungen nicht nur anhand individueller Erfahrungen des Behandlers, sondern gleichzeitig unter Berücksichtigung der besten verfügbaren Erkenntnisse aus der klinischen Forschung, aus Klinik und Praxis getroffen werden können. Vorteil der vorgeschalteten Evidenzprüfung ist die Objektivierbarkeit der Ergebnisse und das Erkennen von „Ausreißern“ durch statistische Methoden.
