Die Ultraschalluntersuchung wird seit den frühen 1980er Jahren zur bildgebenden Diagnostik von Weichteilerkrankungen an der Gliedmaße des Pferdes eingesetzt [15] und leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag bei der Diagnostik von Tendopathien [18] . Zahlreiche Untersuchungen belegen die Sensitivität bei der Erkennung anatomischer Strukturen und der Graduierung des Ausmaßes von Verletzungen sowie die Möglichkeit der Dokumentation des Heilungsverlaufs [12] ,  [14] ,  [22] ,  [23] ,  [24] .
