Dear Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to introduce you to the third issue of UIO – the first issue in 2016.

This issue covers several interesting topics in 5 original articles and 2 case reports. Among these is the long version of the EFSUMB statement on medical student education in ultrasound (the short version was published in the latest issue of the EJU [1]) by Cantisani et al. These statements encourage the use of medical ultrasound in teaching at medical universities for instance in anatomy and physiology and bring up several topics that should be considered. EFSUMB plans to look into several of these topics and uncover in more detail the needs for successfully implementing ultrasound in the medical curriculum across several countries.

In another original article Guth et al. evaluates if hepatic steatosis judged by B-mode ultrasound is correlated to atherosclerosis and whether further cardiovascular work-up should be recommended in patients with this incidental finding. The correlation between hepatic steatosis and cardiovascular disease is well established and most recently evaluated in elderly hemodialysis patients, where patients with NAFLD had a 3 times higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease [2].

We hope you will enjoy this issue of UIO and encourage our readers to submit their work to this open access journal.

On behalf of the editors of UIO,

Caroline Ewertsen
