Summary

The tumescent technique for local anaesthesia (TLA) was introduced 10 years ago by the American dermatologist and pharmacologist J. Klein to simplify cosmetic liposuction. After proving its outstanding value, this form of major local anaesthesia and its singular benefits have gradually been adopted for other indications, for instance in phlebology. The present paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of this method insofar as they are important for phlebology.
