    Introduction:

The group of cochlear implant recipients which were simultaneously and bilaterally implanted has been scarcely studied with regard to speech understanding and dichotic listening. Data of a prospective study with test results of speech comprehension and dichotic listening has been evaluated.

    Material and Methods:

Age appropriated data of 121 children and adolescents which received simultaneously and bilaterally cochlear implantation between 3 and 11 month of age. Speech Comprehension Tests were German Göttinger, Freiburger and HSM-Satztest and the dichotic listening test by Uttenweiler. For statistical evaluation were used T-Test and Pearson Correlation Test.

    Results:

Children tested with Göttinger Kindertest received speech comprehension of 66.92% on the left side and 69.42% on the right side with no significant difference between the sides (p = 0.324). The results in the other tests are similar.

The results of the dichotic listening test showed no significant differences between both sides (p = 0.082). The results are under 60% in both sides (norm: 80%).

    Conclusion:

After a mean duration of CI use of about 7 years children with simultaneously and bilaterally cochlear implantation show similar speech comprehension in both sides. Dichotic listening exists but differs between the children. It can be assumed that the development of dichotic listening takes longer time. So it needs more evaluation about dichotic listening in adults and children. An advantage of one ear could not be verified.
