Comparison of video head impulsetest (vHIT) with suppression head impulse paradigm (SHIMP) in patients suffering from unilateral Ménière's disease

    Introduction:

    Recently the suppression head impulse paradigm (SHIMP) has become available to analyze the activity of the semicircular canals and for example in patients with Ménière's disease. In contrast to the video head impulstest, in the suppressionhead impulse paradigm covert saccades cannot occur because the headimpulse does not superimpose the catch-up saccades.

    Methods:

    35 patients with unilateral Ménière's disease without acute vertigo attack underwent SHIMP and vHIT diagnostics. The gain was compared to identify the affected side and support the diagnosis.

    Results:

    Both tests are useful tools in combination with the clinical symptoms to support the diagnosis of Ménière's disease. SHIMP had a slightly better gain difference between affected and unaffected side and proved to be a useful addition to the vHIT.
