The subjective impairment of dizziness of different etiology

    For meaningful coordination and interpretation of movement, posture and visual information, the brain needs information about the position of the body in space in relation to the moving environment. Disturbances of this multimodal system often have different causes. Patients with the symptom "dizziness" often feel significantly impaired in their quality of life. A suitable measuring instrument for the subjective impairment of dizziness is DHI (Dizziness Handicap Inventory). The aim of the study is to show how the various causes of dizziness affect the patient's suffering.

    In a retrospective study, 150 patients with unexplained chronic dizziness symptoms were examined at an ENT clinic over a period of 12 months. The mean age of the patient group was 58 years SD ± 17 years with a median of 59 years (range 15 to 93 years). 100 women and 50 men were examined. The diagnosis allowed a classification into different etiological groups which can each be assigned a degree of impairment after DHI. It has been shown that combined peripheral and psychosomatic disorders are associated with the highest levels of physical and functional impairment. The highest emotional impairment is reported by patients with peripheral, neurological and psychosomatic disorder.

    The use of the DHI questionnaire in dovetail diagnostics makes it possible to objectify the dizziness of everyday life and to compare therapy concepts for specific dizziness entities. Especially with combined disorders, the highest level of subjective impairment is achieved in the respective Levels.
