Objective View on Clinical and Audiometric Outcome after Balloon Eustachian Tuboplasty (BET)

    Introduction:

    Although the Eustachian tube plays an important role in ventilation of the middle ear and its function is already described, the mechanism of the Balloon Eustachian Tuboplasty (BET) is not completely understood yet. Several different hypotheses try to explain the mechanism.

    Many patients suffer from a dysfunction of the Eustachian tube.

    Up to now there is no gold standard in diagnostics in Eustachian tube dysfunction.

    Based on the air-bone gap in the pure tone audiogram, the tympanograms and the visible deflection of the eardrum while performing Valsalva maneuver, we objectify the outcome of the BET.

    Material and Methods:

    In a retrospective study at the ENT department at MHH 67 BET were analyzed. In all patients pre- and post-operative otoscopy, pure tone audiometry and tympanometry as well as systematic anamnesis were performed.

    Results:

    Based on our measurements, no improvement in the air-bone gap in the pure tone audiograms, the tympanograms and the visible deflection of the eardrum while performing Valsalva maneuver was detected one year after performing BET.

    Conclusion/Discussion:

    Due to its minimal invasive character BET seems to be an option as treatment for Eustachian tube dysfunction.

    The outcome of this study shows that long term effects are missing.

    Based on this knowledge, the concepts for treating a dysfunctional Eustachian tube have to be revised.
