Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medik., das Gewöhnliche Hirtentäschel, gehört zur Familie der Kreuzblütengewächse
(Brassicaceae). Als Ruderalpflanze ist es über die ganze Erde, mit Ausnahme der Tropen,
verbreitet. Seine medizinische Nutzung führt 2000 Jahre zurück. In unseren Breiten
besaß es in seiner blutstillenden Anwendung eine wechselvolle Geschichte. Der Durchbruch
in seiner arzneilichen Geltung kam zu Beginn des 20. Jh., als konkurrierende Drogen
kriegsbedingt nicht mehr zur Verfügung standen. Obwohl die Wirksamkeit der Droge gemäß
klinischer Prüfungen von Arzneimitteln nicht belegt war, wurde dem Kraut durch die
Kommission E in Bezug auf eine evidenzbasierte Medizin eine blutstillende Wirkung
zugesprochen. Den Inhaltsstoffen eines definierten Extraktes lassen sich eine styptische
Wirkung (gefäßverengend und -verdichtend) sowie tonisierende und kontraktionsfördernde
Effekte zuschreiben.

Shepherd’s purse: application in women’s health
Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medik., also referred to as the common shepherd’s purse, belongs to the family
of cruciferous plants (Brassicaceae). It is a ruderal plant that is widespread in
nearly all regions of the world, except the tropics and has been in use as a medicinal
plant for more than 2000 years. In Western Europe, the shepherd’s purse has had a
chequered history regarding its haemostatic application. The breakthrough in its medicinal
use came in the early 20th century when competing drugs were no longer available due to the war. Although the
efficacy of the drug was not supported by clinical trials, a haemostatic effect was
awarded to the shepherd’s purse by the Commission E on the premise of evidence-based
medicine. Styptic (vasoconstriction and vasocompression) and tonic and contraction
promoting effects are attributed to substances of a plant’s defined extract.
