Dear Colleagues,
On the following pages, you will find the summaries of the scientific contributions
of the Annual Meeting of the German Society of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck
Surgery that will take place from May 12-16, 2021, as a virtual meeting.
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the foundation of our scientific society, important contributions
of this Annual Meeting will focus on this extraordinary and wonderful anniversary.
Numerous submissions are dedicated to the scientific motto of the meeting – rare diseases in oto-rhino-laryngology.
By definition, many typical diseases of our discipline are considered as rare diseases
because of their low prevalence. Due to the character of our discipline, which is
defined by the body region of the head and neck and thus has many points of contact
or overlappings with other disciplines, oto-rhino-laryngologists inevitably encounter
rare diseases. In addition, rare diseases have symptoms or even first manifestations
in the head and neck area.
Many contributions in this abstract and poster volume focus on the current state of
diagnostics and therapy as well as on current developments in the field of research
on rare diseases. Furthermore, abstracts are found in this booklet dealing with scientific
topics of the Annual Meeting of 2020 that had to be cancelled because of the Covid-19
pandemic.
Overall, the scientific publications cover the broad spectrum of our discipline.
I want to thank all national and international authors for their manifold and interesting
scientific contributions, and I wish all readers of this volume impressive and new
insights in the current knowledge when studying the abstracts and posters.
I am looking forward to the scientific exchange in the context of the virtual congress
in May 2021 and to personally meeting all colleagues at the occasion of further meetings
after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Stefan K. Plontke
President of the German Society of
Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery
