Dr. Andrew Jacono's book entitled “The Art and Science of Extended Deep Plane Face lifting and Complementary Facial Rejuvenation Procedures” has been recently published by Quality Medical Publishing. In this book, Dr. Jacono fully describes his extended deep plane facelift technique across 500 pages with the help of approximately 800 high-quality color photos/illustrations, including a stream access for two operation videos.

The book is divided into two sections. The first part is devoted to the author's extended deep plane facelift over four comprehensive chapters. The first chapter focuses on the rational understanding behind the technique along with its effectiveness and safety. The next two chapters describe the relevant surgical anatomy of the face and neck and the anatomic changes associated with aging. The fourth chapter exclusively delineates the extended deep plane facelift, with the aid of a step-by-step approach, and depicts the impact of each specific maneuver in the midface, lower face and neck in detail. I believe that his unique modification of extending the sub-superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) dissection to the neck and incorporating this with a deep plane facelift deserves special attention. This contribution, including the sub-SMAS/subplatysmal neck dissection 5 cm inferior to the angle of mandible, releasing of the cervical retaining ligaments, and adding a horizontal platysma myotomy 1 cm below the angulus mandible, significantly improves the cervical contouring and enhances the jawline rejuvenation. The second part of the book contains informative chapters on ancillary procedures for comprehensive facial rejuvenation: opening the neck (includes valuable information on neglected deep neck manipulations such as midline platysma tightening, subplatysmal fat contouring, resection of hypertrophied digastric muscles, and partial removal of ptotic submandibular glands), brow lift, blepharoplasty, perioral rejuvenation, autologous fat grafting, resurfacing, and secondary rhytidectomy. The book includes the following special features in each chapter: key anatomic considerations, supportive scientific studies, and key clinical concepts. The discussions, which are an integral part of every chapter, are based on the astonishing scientific background of a skillful surgeon, sprinkled with pearls of wisdom.

Being very informative, well-written and well-illustrated and having such a comparable scope and depth, this book, in my opinion, will become one of the most referenced books for novice surgeons starting facelift surgery, experienced surgeons deciding to change their practice to the deep plane facelift technique, and competent deep plane facelift surgeons attempting to improve their results. Overall, this is an amazing book that I can strongly recommend to anyone interested in furthering their knowledge of deep plane face and neck lift.
