Dr. N. R. Salampuria (1955–2021)—A Tribute to the Eternal Caring and Social Surgeon

    Dr. N. R. Salampuria (1955–2021)

    Born on July 7, 1955, in a small village, “Shegaon” of Buldhana district of Maharashtra, Nandkishor Ramulal Salampuria belonged to a family of farmers and landowners.

    His illustrious career in the field of medicine started with MBBS from Government Medical College (GMC), Nagpur, in 1973. After completion of MS General Surgery, he was selected for M. Ch Plastic Surgery under the dynamic leadership of renowned surgeons Dr. S Kale, Dr. L.K. Sharma and Dr. Vaidhya. In the year 1984. after completion, he joined as a Senior Resident in Department of Plastic Surgery, JJ Hospital, Mumbai.

    Soon after completing his training from JJ Hospital and Bombay Hospital, he opted to serve his people in Vidarbha, and along with his wife, Dr. Sharada, a gynecologist, started Shriram Hospital in Akola, Maharashtra, 38 years ago. He focused his work on burn care, trauma management, and craniofacial and reconstructive surgeries.

    He was closely associated with The Smile Train Organization for cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries since 2008. He had operated on over 3700 children, creating smiles on the faces of poor and needy patients and their families.

    He served as Associate Professor in GMC Akola and nurtured his love for teaching young doctors. He was associated with many organizations like Lions Club, Indian Medical Association, and many others and served selflessly to help the poor and needy people.

    He was an active member of Association of Plastic Surgeons of India (APSI) ASI, ISBI, NABI, Indian Association Cleft Lip and Palate & Craniofacial Anomalies (executive member), Indian Association of Aesthetic Surgeons, and ISSH.

    He was constantly in touch with all his teachers' seniors and colleagues and was of a very friendly and humble nature. He attended almost every conference and workshop all over and organized few state-level conferences at Akola. Dr. Salampuria organized the Maharashtra State Plastic Surgery Annual Conference at Akola when Dr. JJ Kashalikar was the president.

    He was blessed with good health and suffered a very brief illness; he unexpectedly left for the heavenly abode on January 12, 2021, at the age of 65 years. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, sons-in-law, and two grandchildren.

    He leaves behind an enduring legacy of selfless service and medical knowledge. His children continue to work to bring hope and relief from disease, deformities, and trauma to millions living in pain and suffering.
