Kaninchen sind als Fluchttiere bekannt dafür, dass sie vor gefährlichen oder unbekannten Situationen überstürzt flüchten. Aufgrund der Zusammensetzung ihrer Knochen sind diese sehr spröde und können leicht brechen. Neben der Osteosynthese ist als weitere chirurgische Therapie die Amputation eine Behandlungsoption. Die Erfahrungen zeigen, dass Kaninchen mit 3 Gliedmaßen verhältnismäßig gut zurechtkommen. Wenn bestimmte Ursachen bestehen, kann ein lebensbedrohlicher Zustand durch eine Amputation abgewehrt werden. Im vorliegenden Artikel werden die Gründe für und gegen, sowie die Vorgehensweise einer Amputation der Hintergliedmaße dargestellt.
