Summary

Watery stools in horses represent a constant challenge to practical veterinarians and nutritionists. Often, treatment approaches are associated with rather moderate or short-term treatment success. This frustrates the veterinarian and owner in equal measure. However, the precise diagnosis is crucial for the success of the horseʼs treatment. As a matter of fact, watery stool is not a disease, but only a symptom of an unbearable state for the horse. Thus, the cause of the symptoms should be clarified before the commencement of treatment. Whereas this is needless to say, one often comes across the term “watery stool” as the diagnosis with treatment options ranging from additional feed, alternative therapeutics, yeast, herbal remedies or a combination of these. In addition, the diagnosis of equine watery stools must be holistic and more profound. This implies a combination of laboratory diagnosis, prevalence and subsequent chain diagnostics as well as the horseʼs palpation.
