Summary

Lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf)

Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf (West Indian Lemon grass) is a widely used herb in tropical countries, especially in Southeast Asia. The plant is not only used in aromatherapy, but also in cooking, as herbal tea and in traditional medicine. The compounds identified in C. citratus are mainly terpenes, e. g. citral in the essential oil besides flavonoids and triterpenes. Studies indicate that C. citratus possesses various pharmacological activities such as antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. Various other effects like antimutagenicity, antioxidative and hypoglycemic activities have also been reported.
