Patienten mit chronischen Schmerzen berichten häufig von sexuellen Beeinträchtigungen und Funktionsstörungen, unabhängig von ihrer angenommenen oder nachgewiesenen Entstehung. Diese Personen stehen unter Leidensdruck oder interpersonellen Schwierigkeiten. Die individuellen Ansprüche an eine erfüllte Sexualität sind dabei manchmal nicht erreichbar – und dies beeinflusst die Lebenszufriedenheit, die Intimität und Paarverbundenheit, die allgemeine Leistungsfähigkeit und die Befriedigung im persönlichen und emotionalen Bereich.
