Narrow band imaging (NBI) technology and its possibilities for "optical biopsy" in early laryngeal cancer

    Early detection and diagnosis of laryngeal neoplasms remains a priority in otorhinolaryngology and is crucial not only to reduce mortality but also to optimize therapeutic approaches aimed at achieving the best preservation of the organ and its functions.

    With the development of technology and especially the improvements in the endoscopic sector in recent years, we, otorhinolaryngologists, have been given the opportunity to contribute with greater diagnostic accuracy, specificity and sensitivity in the examination of the upper respiratory tract. The most innovative technology and the last member of the family of "biological endoscopic" technologies is Narrow band imaging (NBI) technology.

    NBI is an endoscopic optical technique that creates an image with improved contrast of the texture of the mucosa and visualization of the mucosal and submucosal vascular structure. Judging by the changes in the vascular structure, we can detect superficial lesions or neoangiogenic patterns at an early stage, which cannot be detected by simple white light endoscopy (WLE). In the course of the presentation, we will focus on our experience with NBI technology in laryngeal neoplasms in the glottis.
