Selbstverletzendes und suizidales Verhalten stellen im Jugendalter häufige Probleme dar. Doch sowohl die Diagnostik als auch die adäquate Behandlung bedeuten für medizinische sowie psychotherapeutische Versorger oft große Herausforderungen. Allein die klare Unterscheidung beider Begrifflichkeiten erweist sich mitunter als schwierig. Daher soll dieser Beitrag eine Übersicht über verschiedene Aspekte sowie eine Abgrenzung beider Phänomene bieten und zur kritischen Auseinandersetzung einladen.
