Aktive Triggerpunkte in Kopf- und Nackenmuskulatur können Spannungskopfschmerzen und Migräne reproduzieren. Möglicherweise setzen Triggerpunkte einen peripheren nozizeptiven Mechanismus in Gang, der zu Veränderungen im Zentralen Nervensystem führt. Vice versa könnte sich eine Triggerpunkt-Therapie positiv auf beide primären Kopfschmerzarten auswirken.
