Background: Headshaking syndrome presents a complex condition with an unknown aetiology, causing suffering for the affected horses and challenges to a horse owner and veterinary professionals. Information on diagnosing and management of the syndrome in Finland is lacking. This study aims to describe the use of veterinary medicine and physiotherapy services for Finnish horses with headshaking.

Materials and Methods: The Research Ethics Committee on Animal Research of the University of Helsinki and the University of Liverpool’s Committee on Research Ethics approved the study. A web-based survey consisting of 60 questions was designed, including multiple-choice or open-ended questions regarding the veterinary and physiotherapy-related factors. The survey was tested by a test group of equine veterinarians (n = 4), veterinary physiotherapists (n = 2), headshaking horse owners (n = 2), a clinical animal behaviourist, and an animal trainer. The survey was open from March to May 2024.
