Der Wassermelonen-Magen ist eine ungewöhnliche Ursache einer oberen gastrointestinalen Blutung. Der Erkrankung liegen vaskuläre Ektasien des Magenantrums zugrunde. Es handelt sich um ein seltenes, aber klinisch interessantes und wichtiges Krankheitsbild, dessen Diagnose in der Praxis häufig verkannt wird und das zu differenzialdiagnostischen Schwierigkeiten führen kann. Die klinische Bedeutung des Wassermelonen-Magens liegt darin, dass er die Ursache eines chronischen gastrointestinalen Blutverlustes mit hohem Transfusionsbedarf sein kann. Die Arbeit fasst aktuelle Erkenntnisse über Ätiologie, Pathogenese und Diagnostik des Wassermelonen-Magens zusammen. Die Therapieoptionen beim Wassermelonen-Magen werden im zweiten Teil der Arbeit im folgenden Heft dargestellt.
