The de la Cruz - Badianus Manuscript - The Past and towards the Future

Summary

The de la Cruz - Badianus Codex is a very important document, being the first medical book edited in the New World. It exemplifies the mixing between Aztec and European medicines. The author, Martín de la Cruz, was an indigenous doctor trained in the prehispanic tradition. The book contains mainly recipes useful against the main and most common illnesses. Very important are the series of plants, animals and minerals which are characterized in the text. The plants are represented in exquisite drawings. Some clinical aspects are recorded, permitting us know how Aztec doctors conceptualize illness. The book is a very rich source for modern basic and clinical research.

Zusammenfassung

Der de la Cruz - Badianus Kodex ist das erste in der Neuen Welt entstandene Medizinalbuch. Die Handschrift ist beispielhaft für eine Vermischung aztekischer und europäischer Medizinsysteme. Der Autor, Martín de la Cruz, war ein mit den vorkolonialen Behandlungsmethoden vertrauter eingeborener Heiler. Das Buch enthält Rezepte gegen die häufigsten Erkrankungen. Beschrieben und genutzt werden hauptsächlich pflanzliche Drogen aber auch solche tierischen und mineralischen Ursprungs. Die Pflanzen sind in vorzüglichen Zeichnungen dargestellt. Einige klinische Aspekte werden genannt, die uns ein besseres Verständnis der aztekischen Krankheitsvorstellungen liefern. Das Buch stellt eine reiche Quelle für heutige Grundlagen- und klinische Forschung dar.
